Chapter Fourteen – Meredith

“He’ll be fine.” Keely’s assurance was probably true.

That didn’t stop Merri from worrying about Silas. He might have lived for centuries but everything dies eventually.

Not a helpful thought and yet she couldn’t get rid of it. Perhaps she would be punished for the spell she cast on the wishing stone.

“Merri.” Aunt Laura’s hand on her shoulder finally woke her from the sinking feeling in the pit of heart stomach. “He’ll be fine.”

“Knowing Silas, he’ll be back at the mansion before us.” Trudy leaned to one side and peeked around the driver’s seat. “It’s getting dark.”

Merri cast a questioning glance in the rearview mirror. “So?”

“So? Do you know how close we are to that vampire bar, Firsty Fangs? What a name!” Trudy shuddered and sat back in her seat, her eyes fixed on the window and the darkening trees beyond.

“The vampire bar is at least a couple of miles away.” Keely half-turned in her seat and looked at Trudy. “And they don’t attack people. They have their blood delivered by volunteers and get it served in glasses.”

“I know,” Trudy replied. “But it’s always made me nervous. And the wolves stirring up trouble just adds to my sense of unease.” She brushed her hand over her hair. “I can’t help it if I’m sensitive to these disturbances in the status quo.”

“Merri! Why don’t you tell Keely about your trip to the world beyond?” Aunt Laura prompted.

“Oh, yeah. How did it go?” Keely seemed relieved as the subject changed from marauding vampires to business. However, even as she turned around and faced the road ahead, she seemed preoccupied. Merri quickly looked away when Keely caught her staring. “Merri? Don’t say it ended in disaster.”

“No, it was good.” She glanced in the rearview mirror and caught a glimpse of her dad’s face. Their earlier happiness and elation at securing some great orders had all but been forgotten in the rush to rescue Keely.

“Is that it?” Keely adjusted her position so that she could see her sister and father. “Come on, share the details. Did you get many orders?”

“We got so many orders.” Merri finally shook off her fears for Silas. He would be okay. He was probably hanging around the wolf shifters to see what information he could glean from them about their plans for the vampires.

Her chest tightened once more as fear bloomed. Deuce and Ace certainly didn’t like vampires. And it sounded as if Deuce was the other potential new leader of the pack.

Which meant they would have to root for a man who threw Keely over his shoulder and carried her off to a lonely cabin. Not to mention Clancy’s reputation of being responsible for a death in the pack.

Neither man seemed well suited for leading a pack of wolves. Not if the town of Wishing Moon Bay was going to remain peaceful.

“And then we reached the last store and Merri charmed the woman there into placing a large order...” Henry’s voice trailed off.

“You did the charming,” Merri insisted.
